Why you should embark upon a Fiji adventure

30th April 2014

Fiji is more than just a luxurious travel destination with glorious hotels and white sandy beaches - although there is definitely plenty of that on offer.

While there are endless opportunities to lay back on the beach, soak in some rays and sip on fruity cocktails as the sun moves through the sky, there are also plenty of thrills to be had in this Pacific Island nation.

Here are some activities you can undertake on a Fiji adventure, and just why this nation is such a great place to visit.

All the water sports you can imagine

Fiji is a haven for those who love diving deep into the water. Even the swimming alone is magical, with clear, warm waters and colourful fish and coral.

You can make the most of it by grabbing a snorkel and taking a look underwater, while those who are really keen to brave the deep can embark upon an escorted diving tour.

There are numerous providers located throughout Fiji's islands. The nation's main island it Viti Levu, but other islands, such as Vanua Levu, Taveuni and Kadavu also receive visitors and are well-worth a trip for those seeking adventures off the beaten path.

While there are plentiful diving sites off Viti Levu (home to the capital city of Suva, as well as Nadi), some of the most spectacular underwater wonders lie a little further afield.

Rainbow Reef and the Somosomo Strait have intensely colourful marine worlds, with thriving bright coral, sponges and gorgeous creatures including reef sharks, manta rays, tropical fish and more.

The area Bligh Water is also another famous diving site. Schools of fish in all hues and shades dart back and forth, while colourful coral and thriving underwater animals will catch your eye in every direction.

Wherever your adventures take you, be sure to head out with seasoned guides, as conditions can be unpredictable and the knowledge and skills of those operating in the area are required.

But there are even more water sports on offer in Fiji. Why not learn to paddle board with a local? This will have you standing up on a board similar to a surfboard, paddling over calm waters while maintaining your balance. It takes a bit of practice to get right without tumbling off into the water - but once you've got it, you'll be hooked!

Kayaking is another much-loved activity. There are kayak tours available around Fiji, while many hotels and resorts will also have them on offer for you to take out for a couple of hours. It's a great activity to while away the afternoon and get to know your destination that much more intimately.

Inland adventures

While many of Fiji's thrilling and fun pursuits are located out on the water, there's plenty of entertainment inland, too.

Discover one of the most beautiful horticultural wonders in the Pacific with the Garden of the Sleeping Giant. Wander through its winding paths, home to over 2,000 varieties of flowers. Beyond the stunning array of flowers there is also a dense and thriving rainforest to explore. You'll find this garden at Wailoko Road, north of Nadi Airport.

Adventure seekers will also love a hike up Tova Peak, located in the Dawasamu district, Tailevu. It's definitely a challenge with more than a few steep inclines, meaning you'll need a good level of fitness. However for your efforts, you'll be treated to vast views of green and blue in every direction.

Which adventure will you tackle first?
