Family time in Kota Kinabalu

11th October 2011

Family holiday expert, Melanie Clout from Clout & Turner Travel Associates, tells us a bit about her recent family trip to Kota Kinabalu.

Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia is a beautiful part of the world to visit and there’s so much to see and do, even with small children like my 2 year old daughter.  We flew there with Royal Brunei Airlines and great for flying with a family.

We stayed in two resorts, the Shangri-La Rasa Ria in Kota Kinabalu and the Empire Resort Country Club in Brunei.  Both properties were excellent value and I would happily recommend either to my clients.  These resorts offer Kid’s Clubs so were very family friendly but also have those touches of luxury so adults feel like they’re on holiday as well.  The resorts are also sensitive to the local culture so you don’t lose that feeling of being in Asia while you’re there.

A highlight of our trip was the Orang-utan Sanctuary.  Make sure you go and see them

when you’re there!  Quad biking was also a fun way to spend a day.  I loved heading out and about. I’ve done quad biking in many countries but here they let you take more control and have some fun.

All in all, Kota Kinabalu is a great destination for family and those travelling without children.  The local culture and food gives you an authentic experience while the luxuriousness of the resorts adds that relaxing and pampering element to the experience.
