Gourmet South Australia

23rd October 2012

If you're seeking a hassle-free holiday, South Australia should be on the top of your list. Just a few hours away, world-class wine regions, fabulous food and friendly people await.

Within 30-minutes from stepping off the plane in Adelaide you will soon find yourself comfortably ensconced in your hotel room. The well-planned city makes it easy to explore by foot, so you can simply meander and stumble across some marvellous, unexpected sights. Regardless of where you stay, chances are you'll be in close proximity to a divine restaurant and unique, engaging activities to satisfy even the most discerning sightseer.

If you're known to dabble in designer clothes, you'll love Rundle Street, home to names like Gorman, Lisa Ho, Morrison, Saba and Sass and Bide. Skip just one street over to unearth the hidden delights of Ebenezer Place, Adelaide's trendiest spot. It's like a little community all of its own, where you can buy a Beglian beer, visit the fine wine merchant at East End Cellars, sort through eclectic fashions at Midwest Trader or simply strike up a conversation with the many friendly business owners.

Head an hour north from Adelaide to tantalise your palate with a wonderful wine journey in the legendary Barossa Valley. Just a further slight 30-minute drive lands you in the charming Clare Valley where you will find Thorn Park by the Vines. The name says it all; you can enjoy a private suite, overlooking glorious vineyards and stunning native bushland.

Your hosts David and Michael deliver a magnificent dining and accommodation experience. The luxury private setting is in the heart of the valley making it the perfect base to explore the multitude of cellar doors and quaint towns, all picturesquely set amongst rolling hills. Nearby, is another ideal destination for a leisurely lunch: Skillogalee Winery, home to award-winning wines.

For a luxury escape you can’t go past Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island. Arriving on KI (that's how it's known to the locals), you'll be in awe of the beautiful surrounds. The fully-inclusive lodge is surrounded by unspoilt national park and the roaring Southern Ocean.

The hardest thing you'll have to do during your stay here is decide between a spa treatment or a tour of the Island’s natural wonders such as Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch and Seal Bay. It's tough. The property boasts an ever-changing menu, sourced mainly from KI or the mainland of South Australia. To top it off, meals are complemented by a delicious array of local wines. Wherever you find yourself in South Australia, you won’t be far from unique and indulgent experiences.
