Our 18-night voyage around the Iberian Peninsula to the shores of Italy offers glimpses of the past and future in equal measure. We'll ease you in gently with time to bask on the beaches of Portimao before crossing the water to the north coast of Africa, visiting cosmopolitan Tangier in Morocco, followed by the Spanish enclave of Melilla, to explore the fort and secret tunnels, and, after a day at sea, La Goulette, Tunisia, close to the ruins of the ancient city of Carthage. Now we enter Italian waters at Cagliari, which introduces us to the scenic island of Sardinia, with its mix of medieval mystery and gorgeous beaches. Pretty Mahon on the Spanish island of Menorca beckons, then Valencia on the Spanish mainland, a city renowned for its futuristic architecture, followed by the lively Catalan port of Barcelona, and the fishing town of Palamos, famous for its juicy red prawns. A relaxing day at sea brings us to ritzy Cannes, to follow in the footsteps of movie stars along the promenade. The razzle of the Riviera continues in Monte Carlo, home to gleaming superyachts and that world-famous casino. Crossing into Italy, we visit La Spezia, gateway to the colorful seaside villages of the Cinque Terre. An overnight in the Tuscan port of Livorno puts trips to the world-leading museums and galleries of Florence, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and the famous vineyards of Chianti all within grasp. We then make a quick hop to picturesque Calvi on Corsica's northwest coast before sailing back to Civitavecchia, our journey's end.
Itinerary
From Moorish walls and Manueline carvings to elaborate azulejo tiles and Gothic arches, the traces of Lisbon's rich history can be seen and felt simply by wandering its storied (and rather hilly) streets. But Europe's second-oldest city is also one of its most cosmopolitan, and amid historic landmarks like Jeronimos Monastery and So Jorge Castle, you'll find chic rooftop bars with views across red terracotta rooftops and the sparkling Tagus river, design-led concept stores selling artisanal souvenirs, and stylish restaurants serving up inventive takes on local ingredients.
The white contour of a church on a hilltop, the narrow streets of the old fishermen and tradesmen quarter, the presence of the sea and the immense beach known as Praia da Rocha identify the character of Portimao. The old town is dominated by the architecture of the late 19th and 20th centuries: houses boasting wrought-iron balconies, ornate stonework around the windows and doors, balustrades of stone and tile-covered ceramics and walls. This southern Portuguese port is the gateway to many historic towns of the Algarve region. The town offers a rich heritage of historical monuments and the eternal natural beauty of the Ria de Alvor. Portimao is also known for its extraordinary Portuguese cuisine. To savour the spirit of Portimao, there is nothing better than to sit in the shade of the trees in the gardens of Manuel Bivar, to watch the fishing boats sail by and to walk through streets and squares that exude the ambience of an active, hard-working town.
Veiled in myth, Morocco's enigmatic port, Tangier, reveals history at every turn. The legend goes that the Greek god Hercules rested from his labors here, for certain, it was a Phoenician colony that could date from as early as the 10th century BCE. Pick out travelers' treasures to take home in the labyrinthine alleyways of the city's Medina, within the walls of a 15th-century Portuguese fortress.
European and Moroccan traditions intertwine in everything from the beguiling blend of medieval and modernist architecture to the food in Melilla, Spain's North African outpost. This cultural crossroads has religious buildings for each of the Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Hindu faiths. Explore Old Melilla, with its beautifully preserved fortress on a rock jutting out into the Mediterranean, and stroll past ornate buildings designed by Enrique Nieto, a student of Antoni Gaudi. And when you need more sustenance than this visual feast provides, tuck into everything from tapas to dishes laced with Moroccan spices.
Day 5 At sea
The port town of La Goulette is the gateway to Tunisias thrumming capital Tunis, a Mediterranean melting pot where French colonial influences meet North African flair. Explore the city's maze-like medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dates to the ninth century; admire the impressive Al-Zaytuna Mosque; and brush up on North African history at the National Museum of Bardo. No port call at La Goulette is complete without a visit to the ancient city of Carthage, once a key trading hub and Mediterranean maritime power, and now a fascinating archaeological site.
Cagliari, capital of Sardinia, sprawls across the hills promising awe-inspiring views for those who venture to Monte Urpinu Park. At its heart lies the historic Castello district, where a Roman amphitheater, medieval towers built by the Pisans, and a 13th-century cathedral with an intricately carved crypt sit beside the monolithic architecture of the Mussolini era. Down by the harbor, the eateries and bars in the Marina buzz with life. In Via Sardegna and Via Cavour taste local flavors such as the peppery salami mustela, salty pecorino cheese, and carta musica, a wafer-thin flatbread said to sound like music when it snaps. They all go well with a glass of cannonau or vernaccia, the island's robust wines.

The 18th-century Fort Marlborough and the impressive Santa Maria Church are just a couple of the many architectural gems to explore, so make sure you pack some comfortable shoes and get exploring on foot. The town's pretty waterfront promenade invites leisurely strolls, and the bustling harbor showcases everything from traditional fishing boats to luxury yachts, while the city's relaxed ambiance extends to its local markets, quaint cafes, and tapas bars, where visitors can savor authentic Spanish cuisine.
Sunbathe in one of Spain's most exhilarating cities. Valencia is vibrant town with dynamic nightlife, outdoor activities and sports, and its mezcla of architectural wonders. In Old Town, see everything from a 15th-century palaces, to recent wonders of modern art.
Past, present, and future converge in the Catalan capital, a place steeped in centuries of history but with a palpably youthful spirit. From the Roman ruins and maze-like medieval streets of the Gothic Quarter to the wonderfully whimsical architecture of Antoni Gaudi, and the Modernist masterpieces of the Picasso Museum and Fundacio Joan Miro, there are treasures old and new at every turn. The city's dining scene is an attraction unto itself: keep it low key with plates of paella and jugs of sangria by the seafront, snack on jamon iberico and fried seafood in the street markets, or indulge in Michelin-starred tasting menus.
Dating back to the 13th century, Palamos is one of Spain's most beautiful coastal towns, retaining much of its historical architecture and charm while embracing modern times with gusto. Life in this fishing village revolves around water. Swimming, sailing, and windsurfing are among the most popular daytime activities, along with sunbathing and some of the best people-watching in Europe. When the sun sets, the city pulsates with a hopping bar and nightclub scene. For foodies, Palamos is famous for its delectable, giant-sized prawns, hauled in by the boatload by local fishermen.
Day 12 At Sea
One of nature's miracles, the Cote d'Azur is blessed with superb natural beauty. This sun-drenched slope stretches some 60 miles westward from the border of the fairy-tale Kingdom of Monaco. And here in glamorous Cannes, where yachts dot the harbor and chic striped sunloungers line the beach, be sure to take some time to explore the designer bars and couture shops of La Croisette.
Glamorous Monte Carlo is the sparkling jewel in the crown of the Cote d'Azur, where boulevards of opulent Belle poque architecture slope gently towards sapphire seas speckled with superyachts. Home to countless prestigious hotels and restaurants, as well as the world-famous Casino de Monte-Carlo, it's no surprise Monaco's most legendary district attracts megastars and multimillionaires. When you're not hobnobbing with high rollers, visit the exquisite 13th-century Prince's Palace of Monaco, take a breath of fresh air among the cacti in the Exotic Garden of Monaco, and tour the famous Monaco Grand Prix Circuit.
