The Hunter Valley Itinerary

13th October 2020

Ann-Catherine Jones from Jones & Turner Travel Associates in New South Wales shares her magical escape to the Hunter Valley.

“Springtime is the perfect time to plan a little escape; and what better place than the picturesque Hunter Valley. Just a mere 2 and a half hours drive from Sydney, it's one of the easiest and most beloved getaways for couples, families and friends. Seeing that it had been over a decade since I last visited the area, I decided that it was time to take a deep dive into what makes this one of my clients' favorite NSW getaways.”

Accommodation: Spicers Guesthouse

“A brisk morning journey up the freeway takes you to the winding country lanes that start setting you into 'relax' mode. In no time at all you’ll arrive at the front gates of the very charming Spicers Guesthouse. My first impression of the property was that it is the very definition of 'Australian Country Style'.”

“Once checked in, it was time to potter around my light, airy and oh-so-chic Signature Suite. With a focus on textures such as linen and leather in the furnishings, beautiful throws and pillows and wonderful artwork on the pristine white walls, the suites are serene, luxurious havens to come home to after a day of indulgence.”

“An evening spent in the private dining room at the Guesthouse's eRemo Restaurant would have to be at the top of any wish list. The restaurant sits between their famous wall of wine, and overlooks the valley and outdoor fire pit. A wonderful array of Modern Italian sharing plates emerge from the kitchen with a dizzying wine selection to accompany. It's a wonderful experience and a memorable evening is guaranteed.”

The To Do List :

Ultimate Winery Experiences “Over two full days, I was immersed completely in the wine world of the Hunter Valley. It was intriguing to see the contrast between the heritage, old world charm of the original vines and the bold and modern sensibilities of the next generation vintners. I loved how each experience was completely unique and filled to the brim with great characters.”

Tyrell's Winery

DAY 1:

Tyrrell's hold the bragging rights to the oldest patch of vines still growing in the region, called `the old patch’. The entire experience leans into the Tyrrell family's legacy, showing barrel rooms full of Shiraz and Chardonnay to tastings of current vintage and museum wines from Tyrrell family's private cellar. With views and history in abundance, it's the perfect place for your introduction to the Hunter Valley and wine making in the region.”

BrokenWood Wines

“Onwards to Brokenwood Wines for the 'The Brokenwood Journey'. We were checked into a lovely private space overlooking the barrel room to enjoy a paired wine and food tasting with six of the best from the cellar. Afterwards we were taken to winemaking central where we met Stuart Hordern — Brokenwood's senior winemaker — who kindly shared with us some of the 2020 Shiraz that they had just bottled.”

DAY 2:

“The following day was spent at one of the prettiest vineyards in the region, Audrey Wilkinson. Set atop a hill with spectacular views of different varieties of vines and the picturesque Brokenback Mountain ranges, it was the perfect place to have a "Picnic Among the Vines'. After a quick tour of the original homestead and acquainting ourselves with the history of the vineyard, it was time for another fabulous wine tasting with all the essential tips we needed in how to select that perfect rose (an essential skill for the summer months).” “All too soon it was time to head back to the city. Wonderful wines, fabulous dining options, beautiful accommodation and the warm personalities and conversations were had and enjoyed.”
