A Perfect 24 Hours In New York

24th January 2016
You can – and must – fit a week's worth of fun into 24 hours in New York City. Will there be eight hours of sleep? Probably not. Will there be non-stop action and entertainment? You bet. Gear up for the hustle and keep your eyes on the prize: memories to last a lifetime.

8:00am

Energise and limber up with a New York power yoga class at Yoga to the People. Pay what you wish, wear what you wish. This is a judgement-free zone.

9:30am

You know what gives as good a buzz as morning yoga? A well-made cup of coffee. Enjoy a flat white at Bluestone Lane. With four coffee shops in Manhattan (plus three cafes), there's plenty of joe to go 'round.

10:00am

Hop on the 7 train to Astoria, Queens, for the best Greek breakfast in NYC. Did somebody say haloumi?

10:30am

You're in the right borough for two terrific museums – Museum of the Moving Image and MoMA PS1.

Noon

For unique boutiques and fashion-forward designers, browse the wares on Brooklyn's trendy shopping streets – Atlantic Avenue, Bedford Avenue and Park Slope's 5th Avenue. If it's Sunday, make a joyful noise at the noon service of Brooklyn Tabernacle, where gospel music raises the roof.

2:00pm

Save room for Jean-Georges Vongerichten's signature molten chocolate cake dessert, a staple of his three-course prix fixe lunch menu at Nougatine. Or, if it's the weekend, stay in Brooklyn and eat your way around the world cuisines of the international vendors at Smorgasburg.

4:00pm

On your bike! A ride around Central Park is the perfect way to enjoy the park's many treasures while working off the week's hot dog consumption.

6:00pm

No better way to enjoy the sunset than from the water. Hop aboard the Zephyr for a luxury cruise around New York Harbor. Wave to Lady Liberty.

8:00pm

Choices, choices. This is prime time for Broadway shows, the opera, the ballet or for watching a fast-paced game of basketball at Madison Square Garden.

10:00pm

NYC eats late. Chow down on Singaporean hawker food at Chomp Chomp, or a juicy steak at STK.

11:00pm

The resident DJ may tempt you to linger over cocktails at STK, but if you hurry you'll have just enough time to make it to the observation deck of Top of the Rock before it closes. The sight of city lights spread out as far as the eye can see is not to be missed.

Midnight

A walk through Times Square's neon wonderland is essential viewing, at least once. Look for the live-feed Kiss Cam.

12:30am

Bedtime? No way. Late night bands and stand-up comedy routines are just getting started.

2:00am

One last drink at Employees Only. Try the Manhattan, a grown-up cocktail with Rittenhouse Rye, Italian Vermouth, Grand Marnier and bitters.

3:00am

A well-deserved rest between the eco-sensitive cottony soft sheets at One Central Park. Goodnight, New York.
